Charles F. Salt, Jr. Biography
Charles Franklin Salt, Jr. was born in Columbus, Ohio on June 30, 1924. He graduated from Bexley High School in 1942 and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps where he was trained as a meteorologist and served from 1943 to 1946 at various United States Air Force bases including those in Hawaii and the Philippines. After his discharge from the military, he attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio and graduated with a B.A. degree in physics in 1948. He married his high school sweetheart, Alice Gretchen Schacht, on June 14, 1948. He took some graduate school classes at The Ohio State University while also working at Battelle Memorial Institute as an electrical engineer. Later, he joined his brother as a co-owner of Salt Brothers Hardware Company in Columbus where he remained until his retirement in 1988. After a long and active life, Charles Salt passed away at age 89 on October 1, 2013. His children have donated this weather station to the Byrd Polar Research Center in his memory since meteorology was his lifelong interest.
